Hi twinsane

I've made a few brews with it now and I've been having trouble getting it to grow. I've dispatched about four samples from my own batch and I'm currently growing more on my windowsil. I think the problem may be temperature regulation so I'm going to try and clear an area for a heat mat to keep it at a constant temperature.

I've got a list of about seven or eight people who are in the queue at present - I was hoping to get more out the door, it's just not growing at all at the moment!

How did the ginger beer turn out? Is it worth all of the trouble making it and if so, do you have any plant available yet?

Go for it - poly tunnels pretty much remove the need to harden off - they may go a bit droopy for a few days but they'll pick up as soon as they've got some roots out.

I found last year that the ones in poly tunnels put out plenty of leaves, but not much in the way of fruit. The ones outside fruited almost the same time and produced the same if not more. They'll soon take over so make sure you prune where necessary.

If your tomatoes are a bit spindly, plant up to the first set of leaves - the furry stem will send out roots and will take up more nutrients and be a bit more stable in wind - which of course won't be a problem because they're in a poly tunnel.

On the subject of cold frames...I am growing tomatoes on my kitchen windowsill and want to plant them into my polytunnel. Do they need hardened off at all or can they go straight to polytunnel?
Thanks

Gak - straw must let the little buggers in. We buried our first tyre in the soil about 3/4 way in (had tyres to spare!) to keep the mice out a little (their only wee and can't burrow too far down). When we back filled the tyres we used a mixture of manure and soil - so they'd have to burrow through to get at the stems.

This all worked great - got about 4 tyres up and left them in so long we got about 8 - 10 bakers per tyre stack and another 30 or so decent potatoes - was a bit of a success that year!

Was also told recently to plant linseeds amongst the potatoes. keeps off a certain nasty pest (can't remember what tho). You can move the linseeds when you dig potatoes up and keep then until they go to seed -sorting out next year's supply.
