REAL ginger beer instructable

Well the time was finally here to make some ginger beer!

http://www.instructables.co.uk/id/The-REAL-ginger-beer-recipe/

So I made an instructable at the same time.  Since it’s the first time I’d made it, I’ve really got my fingers crossed.  By the way so far I have three people awaiting samples of ginger beer plant, so don’t forget to ask for some in the comments here (rather than instructables).

To satisfy demand I’m actually going to make 5g of ginger beer next week and let people pass judgment at the RALGA plant sale.

I guess I better get some paper cups for people sample with!

How did the ginger beer turn out? Is it worth all of the trouble making it and if so, do you have any plant available yet?

    • Hi twinsane

I’ve made a few brews with it now and I’ve been having trouble getting it to grow. I’ve dispatched about four samples from my own batch and I’m currently growing more on my windowsil. I think the problem may be temperature regulation so I’m going to try and clear an area for a heat mat to keep it at a constant temperature.

I’ve got a list of about seven or eight people who are in the queue at present – I was hoping to get more out the door, it’s just not growing at all at the moment!

Hi Tim, been reading about your Ginger beer plant on “allotments4all” and I’d appreciate a sample of your plant.I used to make beer and wine but the kits etc became ridiculously expensive so I packed it in. Proper ginger beer sounds ideal.
    regards Mick

    • Hi Mick – you and the world it seems! mostly because of my instructable on the stuff! I’ve been doing my best but it’s just not growing enough, so I’m probably going to change strategies on it and see what I can do!

    Hi Tim,
I’ve stalked you from selfsufficientish.com via instructables.com to this here blog – and I’m really keen to get some home-brew ginger beer on the go. If you don’t have any plant, in your experience could you recommend a decent mail-order source please?

    • Hi Alastair – mine has met with a fatal end, however you can always order some from gingerbeerplant.net

    Hi Tim,
I really enjoyed your instructable! I had never heard of GBP until I read it. How is the brewing going? Also interested in getting some GBP if there is any available. I would like to try REAL ginger beer for a change.

    • Not so good, I dropped mine when I moved house, but I’ve reordered from from Gingerbeerplant.net – thanks for commenting and when my batches are growing I may be in a position to let you have some at some point in the future, but no promises!

I love the taste of ginger and enjoyed your instructable very much. You mentioned that you were going to explain the cultivation of ginger beer plant. Did you ever do that and if so, can you provide a link?

Like everyone else, I’m interested in getting some ginger beer plant. Any information or help you can provide would be much appreciated. (I live in the states. This could be an opportunity for you Brits to recolonize us, only this time with ginger beer. lol)

    • Hi Art, try http://www.gingerbeerplant.net – he’s always willing to help and I know he’s sent it overseas before. Unfortunately my plant has suffered a setback by being dropped on the floor at a great height scattering it for evermore. I’ve just reordered from the same place.

To make it breed you only need to feed it sugar and keep it warm (just like yeast) though it’s recommended you add a little of yeast nutrient from time to time to help it grow. Just brewing a batch should make it grow!

    Thanks for the information Tim.

I bought some ginger beer plant yesterday on ebay from tbirkin of Oxfordshire. I don’t know much about this seller other than almost everyone who’s bought ginger beer plant from him in the past through ebay has given him positive reviews.

    Hi Tim, interesting post.

The Guardian newspaper did a feature on homemade ginger beer recently so it’s obviously coming back into fashion :-)

Do you by any chance have any plant sample you could share with me? I’d love to start up a Cambridgeshire ginger beer chain.
